Wiring Information

Wiring Inspection Fee Schedule
Effective December 1, 2004

Residential (Single Family, Condominiums, and Apartments):

Inspections - 3 Types

  1. Rough - Note: either 1 or 2 are interchangeable
  2. Service - in order of request
  3. Finish - Always last
If an alarm is being wired by the original electrician on the original permit, an alarm inspection is allowed on that permit.

If an alarm is being wired by someone other than the original electrician, a separate permit is requried ($50).

Every 1,000 square feet of floor area thereafter:

Note: An additional $30 will be charged if an additional inspection is required because of code infraction or inspection was requested but the work was not complete to point to warrant an inspection.

Underground Electric Installation Policy Charges

Terms, conditions and fees for all contractors and electricians doing work in Shrewsbury effective December 1, 2004:

Secondary Service

  • $315 per home charge for underground electric secondary service up to 150 feet with an additional $1.90 per foot thereafter. (200A service)
  • $430 per home charge for underground electric secondary up to 150 feet with an additional $2.60 per foot thereafter. (400A service)
  • The secondary service charge will be due and payable to SELCO at the time the wiring permit for the house is issued.

Underground Primary

  • A primary cable charge of $5.24 per linear foot of road within a subdivision will be assessed to the developer.
  • The primary conductor charge is due at the start of the project for the amount of road that is expected to be installed during the following twelve-month period. Electric service will not be installed until these charges are paid.

Temporary Service Fee

  • Fee to install temporary service, inspection and removal - $285.
 Terms and Conditions
Meter Sockets for Self-Contained Meters
A. All new houses shall have 200 amp services with an approved single-handle-operated manual bypass on meter socket.
B. All Commercial and Industrial installations shall have a meter socket with an approved single-handle-operated manual bypass.

Automatic bypasses are never permitted.
 
>
All 320-ampere meter sockets shall have Company approval. A listing of approved sockets is available from the local Meter Department.
 
>
Sockets with manual bypass must meet the following requirements: The non-bypassed, in-service position of the operating mechanism must be visible when the meter is installed.
 
>
It must not be possible to replace the meter socket cover when the operating mechanism handle is in the bypassed position.
 
>
All sockets with bypasses rated 200 or more amperes shall have a mechanism which locks the meter blades in the socket jaws.
C. Clearance
 
>
The minimum clearance between the sides of multi-station troughs, or single position sockets and the building wall is 4 inches.
 
>
The minimum clearance between meter sockets and gas meters or gas fitting opening is 3 feet.
D. Meter Locations
 
>
Meter equipment shall be installed on the line side of the service disconnecting means (hot sequence).
 
>
Outdoor meter locations are required for all single occupancy installations. Each location shall be readily accessible to Company representatives for meter reading, testing, and maintenance. Service will not be provided if reaching the meter requires Company employees to use adjacent property, climb fences or other obstructions, or cause damage to the Customer's shrubbery or flower beds in gaining access to the meter. The meter socket shall not protrude over the sidewalk or driveway. Meters on garages shall be so located that they will not be damaged by motor vehicles.

Meter Height
A. Outdoor Meters Outdoor meter sockets or troughs should be mounted so that the face of the meter is less than six feet above the final grade. In no instance will any meter be installed with the top of the meter more than six feet nor the bottom of the meter less than three fee above the final grade. A clear area of three feet is required in front of each meter.
B. Indoor Meters Multiple meter centers installed indoors shall be mounted so that the top of the meter is no more than six feet and the bottom of the meter is not less than two feet above the floor level. A clear area of three feet is required in front of each meter.
 
Identification of Meter Sockets and Customer Disconnecting Means
All meter sockets and customer disconnecting means shall be plainly and permanently marked proper suite, floor, office, etc. by the electrical contractor or owner Service will not be provided to a building that has unidentified meter sockets.
 
Assigning Location of Service and Metering Equipment
The locations of the service and metering equipment shall be assigned by SELCO. No wiring dependent upon service entrance and meter locations shall be started until these locations have been assigned by SELCO and approved by the inspection authority having jurisdiction.

Contractors will notify SELCO of their intent to do work at least ten days in advance to allow SELCO time to assign locations.

Instrument Transfer Secondaries
A rigid metal raceway shall be provided between transformer cabinet and the meter test switch cabinet for instrument transformer secondaries as follows:
  1. Provide 1 ¼ inch conduit for secondary conductor runs that are less than 20 feet in length.
  2. Provide 1 ½ inch conduit for secondary conductor runs that are 20 –50 feet (100 conductor ft.) in length. The maximum distance between meter and current transformer shall be 50 feet.
  3. Secondary wiring will be furnished and installed by SELCO.
 
Maximum Span of Wires

The maximum single span distance SELCO will run its overhead service drop conductors (open wire or cable) to the point of service attachment is 120 feet. Building heights, large conductors, or the necessity for street, driveway, or sidewalk crossings may reduce maximum permissible spans.

Ground Movement
Raceways and cable entering raceways, where subject to movement by settlement frost, shall be so arranged as to prevent damage to the enclosed conductors or to equipment connected to raceways.

This section is intended to recognize “S” loops in underground direct burial to raceway cable transitions, expansion joints in pipe risers to fix equipment, and generally the provision of flexible connections to equipment subject to settlement of frost heaves.

 
Motor Specifications
Limitation of size. SELCO reserves the right to refuse service to the following:
  • Single phase motors larger than 1HP or three phase motors larger than 5HP.
  • Single or three phase motors of larger rating may be permitted providing SELCO’s facilities are adequate to supply service and the use of such motor(s) does not interfere with the quality of service rendered to other customers.
  • In order that proper capacity may be available to supply the load, SELCO must be advised of the motor(s) to be installed.
 
Grounding
Grounding electrode at panel or meter - will consist of two (2) 8 foot ground rods, 8 feet apart.
 
Underground Service
  • At pole 10’ steel pipe and elbow for power
  • At pole 10’ 1” PVC for cable TV
  • 3” PVC schedule 40 pipe for 200 amp service
  • 4” PVC schedule 40 pipe for above 200 amp service
  • 1” PVC schedule 40 pipe for cable TV
 
Temporary Service Structure
  • Overhead or underground service
  • Diagrams are at SELCO’s office
