K-6 Standards

September 19, 2005

Welcome to the website of the Shrewsbury Public Schools! The many pages and links contain much information about the school district: please feel free to browse as you wish.

The district enjoyed a successful opening of school for 2005-06 and welcomed nearly 6,000 students. It is remarkable that schools shut down for two months, make changes (e.g., 42 new staff, new bus routes, etc.), and re-open with a high level of productivity within just a day or so! In any case, that is exactly what happened, again, this year!

This statement focuses on the school district’s goals. The school committee will ultimately vote on the goals, but the items listed below provide an overview of some of the emerging priorities for 2005-2006:

  • Review Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status in MCAS testing for each school and set measurable MCAS improvement targets for students in grades 3,4,5,6,7,8.
  • Conclude curriculum review for Visual Arts and Music/Drama and host four-member visiting teams (from other school districts).
  • Implement the Everyday Math program for all students in grades K-6.
  • Improve the recruitment of staff members of racial and ethnic diversity by developing a staff advisory committee.
  • Develop an action plan in response to the PreK-12 Guidance Services curriculum review report.
  • Adopt a long-term facilities plan.
  • Finalize an elementary redistricting plan by May.
  • Review existing budget process and documents for clarity and sufficient detail; increase the use of comparative data in budget documents.
  • Develop a five-year fiscal projection and share the projection with community leaders, including the finance committee and selectmen.

The entries above signal the ambitious pursuit of excellence that characterizes the Shrewsbury Public Schools. Our mission remains to provide students with a high quality educational experience within realistic fiscal constraints. We are proud that Shrewsbury continues to score in the upper echelons of districts on MCAS, but at a per-pupil cost that is significantly below the state average.

Sincerely,
Anthony J. Bent
